ADME Awards

The Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators is pleased to announce the addition of three awards that will be given out each year at Med Ed Day. The goal for establishing these awards is to provide recognition to outstanding ADME members for their educational work. Award names and descriptions were chosen to honor these three people who dedicated a significant amount of time and energy into making ADME what it is today.

Steve Kanter Exemplary Educator Award

Dr. Kanter, in his former role as Vice Dean of the Medical School, established the Academy in 2006. This award recognizes an early or mid-career faculty member who is an emerging leader in the field of medical education. Candidates should have a strong track record of excellence in teaching of learners Pitt/UPMC, innovation, and scholarship. Candidates should be actively involved in furthering the mission of the Academy.

Nominations for this award will be accepted from any Academy member. Nominations should include sufficient information demonstrating why you feel your nominee is deserving of this award (no more than 1 page). Nominees will then be invited to complete their nomination package by providing their current CV.

2023 - Amar Kohli, MD, MS

Ann Thompson Award for Lifetime Achievement

Dr. Thompson sponsored the Academy for more than a decade and facilitated its exponential growth while serving as Vice Dean of the Medical School until her retirement in 2024.  This award recognizes a senior faculty member who has demonstrated commitment to and has advanced medical education at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Candidates will have a track record of excellence in the areas of teaching, scholarship, leadership, and mentorship, as well as involvement in the Academy.

Nominations for this award will be accepted from any Academy member. Nominations should include sufficient information demonstrating why you feel your nominee is deserving of this award (no more than 1 page). Nominees will then be invited to complete their nomination package by providing their current CV.

2023 - Thomas Painter, MD

Jamie Johnston Award for Service to ADME

Dr. Johnston was the longest-running Chair of the Academy until his retirement in 2017.

This award recognizes a member of the ADME who has demonstrated a track record of outstanding service to the Academy. The candidate should have served a tenure of at least 5 years in the Academy, with evidence of continued, impactful service that has furthered the Academy’s mission to advance education through innovation, professional development, and supporting and promoting educational scholarship. 

The candidate for this award will be selected by the ADME Chair and Co-Chair with input from the ADME Advisory Council and ADME administrative staff members.
